Despite going out of his way this past year to push the subject of a VAN HALEN reunion tour featuring Michael Anthony along with sets by both him and David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar is putting the idea to rest. Hagar is currently on the road with THE CIRCLE, which consists of Michael Anthony, drummer Jason Bonham, and guitarist Vic Johnson. The group plays songs from all eras of its members’ lives, including tracks from VAN HALEN and LED ZEPPELIN.
According to The Pulse Of Radio, Hagar spoke about his regrets regarding VAN HALEN, telling Newsday, “The last thing I want to do is have one of us, that are still alive and able to do something, die and then go, ‘I wish we would have got together one more time.’
“The VAN HALEN thing, I think, is a dead horse. Honestly, I’m so busy and occupied with everything else in my life that it’s not on my front burner where every day I’m checking my e-mail. It’s not on my bucket list.”
Sammy Hagar and David Lee Roth actually toured together in 2002, when neither one of them was in VAN HALEN, although Hagar told The Pulse Of Radio at the time that they weren’t exactly pals. “In the beginning of the tour, Dave and I got along pretty good, ’cause we were trying to make it happen,” he said. “And once it happened, and everybody got used to that, we went back to our old selves, who don’t get along, and all the stuff backstage got ugly a couple of times.”
Hagar, who has made in-roads in patching up his relationship with Eddie Van Halen in the past few years, hasn’t made music with Eddie or Alex Van Halen since his final tour with VAN HALEN back in 2004.
In 2007, the Van Halen brothers, Wolfgang Van Halen and Roth announced they would be hitting the road for a reunion tour. Anthony later told Music Radar that he “found out about that tour like everybody else did — in the press.”
Anthony has played primarily with Hagar in the thirteen years since he last performed with VAN HALEN, in groups like CHICKENFOOT and THE CIRCLE.
