CHRIS BRODERICK: Why I Stopped Playing Seven-String Guitar With MEGADETH

In a recent interview with Guitar World magazine, former MEGADETH guitarist Chris Broderick was asked why he stopped playing a seven-string guitar with the band after his first tour with the Dave Mustaine-led act. “Dave felt a seven-string guitar wasn’t an original thrash metal instrument,” he replied. “Therefore he felt it would be better if I used six strings.”

Asked if Mustaine told him what to play and how to play it, Broderick said: When we did songs from the back catalog, I was playing another guitarist’s parts, whether it was Chris Poland, Marty Friedman or Jeff Young. So I played like they did and Dave did his part. That always worked out really well. As far as the albums I played on, Dave designated the solo spots and he had some input in what I could or could not do.”

ACT OF DEFIANCE, the band featuring Broderick and fellow former MEGADETH member Shawn Drover (drums), alongside ex-SCAR THE MARTYR singer Henry Derek Bonner, and SHADOWS FALL‘s Matt Bachand (bass), released its debut album, “Birth And The Burial”, on August 21 via Metal Blade Records.

Only hours after Drover announced his exit from MEGADETH on November 25, 2014 to “to pursue [his] own musical interests,” Broderick revealed he also quit the legendary metal band, saying that he was leaving the group “due to artistic and musical differences.” Chris later stated about his decision to exit MEGADETH: “It was simply time [for me to leave]. I’d been in [MEGADETH] for seven years and I really wanted to just be able to have that kind of creative freedom to write anything I wanted to, to go anywhere with it that I wanted to and just kind of direct my own course.”
