ANDREAS KISSER: 'Every Day We Wake Up, It's Like We Build A New SEPULTURA'

On March 2, Matt Mills of Far Beyond Written conducted an interview with guitarist Andreas Kisser of Brazilian/American metallers SEPULTURA in London, England. You can now listen to the chat below.

Asked if SEPULTURA can still be considered the same band in 2017 as it was when he first joined the group thirty years ago, Andreas said: “Of course not, man. I think no band is the same. You know, BLACK SABBATH, [LED] ZEPPELIN, [DEEP] PURPLE… any band. Probably AC/DC and the RAMONES, they are always the same, but not as a criticism. They are what they are, and they are successful doing what they’re doing. But I hope we are not the same. [Laughs] I think that’s our spirit.”

He continued: “We build this band daily. Every day we wake up, it’s like we build a new SEPULTURA. That’s the way it is. It’s the same with your job, it’s the same with your life. Every day you’re there confirming stuff that you believe in, and you fight for it. So I hope we’re not the same band. We never look for that. Even with Max and Igor [Cavalera] in the band, you see how different the albums were — from ‘Schizophrenia’ to ‘Beneath The Remains’ and ‘Arise’, and especially ‘Chaos A.D.’ and ‘Roots’, we grew up. We got married, we have kids and all the relationships. Igor separated [from the band] and stuff. You know, a lot of stuff that happens that we grow as people, and consequently, as musicians as well, because everything’s an influence when you do art. So I think we embrace the changes, I think we feed from challenges. That’s the beauty of it. Otherwise, you’d be home, really, because it would be boring to come out on the road and do the same stuff all over again.”

Kisser added: “Like I said, [it’s a] daily battle, and if you play [the song] ‘Inner Self’ since 1989, it’s a new ‘Inner Self’ every night, because of a different crowd, different atmosphere, different feeling, and that’s the beauty of the stage — you never know what’s gonna happen. I mean, you have a plan — you wanna play the songs [laughs] and stuff — but live, it’s live; it’s the momentum.”

SEPULTURA‘s latest album, “Machine Messiah”, was released on January 13 via Nuclear Blast. The disc was produced by the band and Jens Bogren (SOILWORK, OPETH, KATATONIA, AMON AMARTH) of Fascination Street Studios in Örebro, Sweden. The CD’s cover artwork was created by Filipino artist Camille Della Rosa.
