FOO FIGHTERS frontman Dave Grohl has been confirmed to appear at this year’s Academy Awards ceremony, according to The Pulse Of Radio. Grohl will give a “special performance” on the show, although further details are not yet available. Grohl was among a number of musical artists announced for the event, along with Lady Gaga, The Weeknd, Sam Smith and others.

It’s not clear what Grohl‘s connection might be to the Oscars. He didn’t write a song for any soundtracks and FOO FIGHTERS“Sonic Highways” documentary isn’t nominated. He was also not involved with the Kurt Cobain documentary “Montage Of Heck”.

He could be doing some sort of tribute to an artist who passed away — possibly David Bowie, who did a lot of film work in addition to his music.

A current list of everyone set to appear at the 88th Academy Awards is available on the Oscars‘ web site. Of the musicians named, only Grohl was specified as a performer so far.

Chris Rock will host the awards show, set to air on February 28 at 7:00 p.m. ET on ABC.

Speaking of the late Bowie, Dave Grohl is also part of the distinguished list of artists — which includes the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS and COLDPLAY‘s Chris Martin — whom Bowie turned down for collaboration.

In a video for Playboy.com in which he and FOO FIGHTERS/NIRVANA guitarist Pat Smear drive around to visit some of Bowie‘s old Los Angeles haunts, Grohl revealed that he had been asked to come up with a song for a movie soundtrack and decided to see if Bowie wanted to sing on it.

According to Grohl, Bowie responded, “David, I watched the movie and I got to be honest, it’s not my thing… I’m not made for these times. So thanks, but I think I’m gonna sit this one out.”
