DAVID DRAIMAN: DISTURBED Is Not Imprisoned By Any Sort Of Musical Classification

Cameron Buchholtz and Britt Rose of the Rock 100.5 The KATT radio station conducted an interview with DISTURBED frontman David Draiman on the band’s tour bus during this year’s Kattfest, which was held on August 11 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. You can now watch the chat below. A couple of excerpts follow (transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET).

On whether DISTURBED‘s four-year hiatus prior to the release of last summer’s “Immortalized” album contributed to the band’s current popularity on the road:

David: “I think that’s definitely a factor. I think that absence definitely makes the heart grow fonder. But everything, really, has been working in our favor this cycle. Every single has blown up. The success of the cover of [SIMON & GARFUNKEL‘s] ‘The Sound Of Silence’ is well above and beyond our expectations, and I’m sure it’s helping us reach fans that we either did not have before or reinvigorated existing ones. So it’s been probably a perfect storm of elements that have led to it.”

On the musical diversity of “Immortalized”:

David: “There’s a little bit of yin and yang on this record. The one thing that we did say going into this writing cycle was that there would not be any limitations of any kind, that we go in whatever direction simply felt best, and we would use our own intuition as the barometer and not rule anything out. So songs like, for instance, ‘The Light’, on the record, or our cover version of ‘The Sound Of Silence’, or songs like ‘You’re Mine’ and others like that, definitely do take on a little bit more of a positive note. But, you know, there’s still stuff like ‘The Vengeful One’ and stuff like the title track, ‘Immortalized’, in and of itself that… and even going into very, very dark territory with tracks like ‘Save Our Last Goodbye’. So, we’re all getting older, we’re all better at what we do, we’re all more open to doing things we’ve never done before. We don’t really feel that we’re confined to any sort of classification that we have to be imprisoned by. So, you know, at this point, for us, DISTURBED is what we make it. So it’s nice to be able to finally have that freedom.”

DISTURBED‘s sixth studio album, “Immortalized”, was released in August 2015.

The effort became the band’s fifth LP in a row to enter the chart at No. 1 — a feat shared only with METALLICA and DAVE MATTHEWS BAND.
