On November 23rd, UK rockers Def Leppard held a press conference prior to their show in Singapore. Guitarist Phil Collen commented on up and coming artists now versus when he and his bandmates were starting out:
“When people form bands now, the motivation is a lot different to what we had. I ask a lot of young people, ‘What do you wanna do?’ They want to be recognized or noticed, social media being one of the things. They want to be on YouTube, they want people to take notice of them. We wanted to make music, we wanted to be artists first, and there’s a big difference. And I always stress that we’re happy about creating and making music, and that’s our fulfillment. But, like I said, a lot of the people in this social media world, they want be recognized. It’s more of an ego-driven kind of thing, which is a little bit of a shame. We still have the thing where we want create and make music, and that’s still really fulfilling to us.”
Def Leppard’s new self-titled studio album (Mailboat Records) debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums and Top Independent Albums charts. The album also took the #5 spot on Billboard’s Top Current Albums, #10 spot on the Top 200 and #9 on the Overall Digital Album Sales chart, as well as claiming 15 top 10 debuts around the world. A third album commentary has been released. Check them all out below.
