Thomann Music conducted an interview with legendary bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes (DEEP PURPLE, BLACK SABBATH, BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION) at the Orange booth at this year’s NAMM show in Anaheim, California. You can now watch the chat below.
Speaking about his status as a rock “legend,” Hughes said: “I’m as normal as they come. I’m just a musician that was in the right place at the right time and I had the ability never to give up. I had the love of music. I learned how to read music at 11 years old. I played the trombone — not a sexy instrument. I was named after Glenn Miller — you know who he is, a trombone player. I was born into a musical family, and I had no other choice than to become a soccer player or a musician, and I chose the right thing.”
Asked if there is a specific period of his career that iis particularly memorable for him, Hughes said: “There was a period before DEEP PURPLE, with TRAPEZE, a long time [ago]. I was 18 years old. We were playing to five people a night. And when I left the band, we were playing to ten thousand people a night. Then I joined DEEP PURPLE and it got huge. I remember that, because I was borrowing money from my parents and really working it. And then it happened for me. And it happened because I never took my eye off the ball and I never wanted to stop. So that was the most spiritual moment for me.”
Glenn will spend most of 2019 on the road as part of his “Glenn Hughes Performs Classic Deep Purple Live” tour. The trek finds him performing various hits and deep cuts from the DEEP PURPLE catalog, including “Burn”, “Stormbringer”, “Sail Away” and “Smoke On The Water”, among others.
During the “Glenn Hughes Performs Classic Deep Purple Live” tour, Glenn and his band, featuring Søren Andersen (guitars), Mike Mangan (keys), and Ash Sheehan (drums), focus on arrangements from the live albums — not studio recordings — for the classic PURPLE songs.
