A benefit concert for HELIX drummer Greg “Fritz” Hinz will be held on January 18, 2019 at Eastside Bar in London, Ontario, Canada. HELIX will perform at the event, as will KILLER DWARFS and SYRE.
According to HELIX singer Brian Vollmer, Fritz sustained his injuries after going out to the front of his home to fix some shingles on the roof. When his girlfriend’s sister went out to check on him, he was laying on the front lawn, having fallen from the roof. He had a seizure on the front lawn and then another on the way to the hospital in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. They immediately put him in a drug-induced coma with breathing tubes down his throat.
This past Saturday, the doctors removed the breathing tubes and took Fritz out of the induced coma, although he has to use an oxygen mask to breathe. Vollmer says: “Although he’s able to speak and communicate, at times he’s lucid; other times not so much. For instance: He told [his girlfriend] Tracey he was going to paint the new front room peach — and the curtains too. He also keeps asking Tracey to help him take his drums ‘downstairs’ and ‘what are the other bands playing?’ The doctors have told us that this is normal for people with brain injuries. Bottom line is that he is going to have a long recovery and rehab ahead of him — possibly up to two years.”
A GoFundMe page has been launched by Vollmer to help relieve the stress of having to pay Fritz‘s bills.
Hinz joined HELIX in 1982 and stayed in the band until 1996, before returning to the group 13 years later.
HELIX‘s latest studio album, “Bastard Of The Blues”, came out in 2014.
