METALLICA has been named the most-streamed heavy metal band in the world, with fans listening to 11,892 years’ worth of their music.
According to Spotify, the world’s biggest and most popular streaming music platform, METALLICA has 7 million listeners a month. The band’s most popular song, “Enter Sandman”, has been streamed over 108 million times.
Meanwhile, METALLICA‘s music is included on 15 million user playlists across the streaming site.
METALLICA in 2012 made all of its studio albums, as well as various live material, singles, remixes and collaborations, available on Spotify. The move was significant because Sean Parker, who co-founded Napster, sat on the board of Spotify. METALLICA waged a battle with Napster sixteen years ago over the illegal sharing of the band’s music, which resulted in both legal action and a battered public image for the band.
In announcing the Spotify deal, METALLICA released a statement in which it said: “We are extremely proud to be a part of Spotify, who not only has a proven track record, but is by far the best streaming service.”
METALLICA is now able to make these deals directly since, as of 2012, the band has complete control over the master tapes of all its audio and video recordings. The band has also launched its own label, Blackened Recordings.
METALLICA sued Napster after the band discovered that a leaked demo version of its song “I Disappear” was circulating on the service before it was released.
METALLICA‘s new studio album, “Hardwired… To Self-Destruct”, arrived on November 18.
