QUEEN's ROGER TAYLOR Calls Collaboration With ADAM LAMBERT 'A Magical Partnership'

QUEEN drummer Roger Taylor appeared on ABC‘s “Good Morning America” earlier today to discuss a new documentary called “The Show Must Go On: The Queen + Adam Lambert Story”. Airing tonight, the film tells of the story of how Taylor and guitarist Brian May teamed up with 2009 “American Idol” runner-up Adam Lambert to form a hugely successful touring partnership years after the 1991 death of the band’s original frontman Freddie Mercury.

Speaking with “Good Morning America”, Taylor said that it felt like QUEEN was done after Mercury passed away from complications of AIDS. “Well, frankly, we thought it was all over,” the drummer admitted (see video below). “I think Brian and I, we kind of thought, ‘Well, that was the end of that chapter.’ And everything that’s happened, especially since we met Adam, has just been fate unfolding. And I guess this film tonight is telling the basic story of that.”

“The Show Must Go On” features rare concert footage and exclusive, revealing portraits of the bandmembers offstage, including brand-new interviews with Lambert, his parents Leila and Eber, and QUEEN founding members May and Taylor, as well as “American Idol” judge Simon Cowell, Golden Globe and Oscar winner for Best Actor “Bohemian Rhapsody”‘s Rami Malek, and FOO FIGHTERS‘ Taylor Hawkins.

Asked what it was about Adam that made him and May think the singer was the right guy to front QUEEN, Taylor told “Good Morning America”: “Well, I don’t think we realized [it] at first. A friend of mine called me up and said, ‘I’ve just seen the most amazing singer on ‘American Idol’.’ And I checked it out, and he was singing ‘Whole Lotta Love’ by LED ZEPPELIN and just blowing it away — fantastic. And we got in touch. We were then asked to do the final of ‘Idol’, which we flew over to do with the two finalists. And we just magically with Adam. And we did a couple of things in the next year, and it sort of grew into touring. And we formed a magical partnership now which just works beautifully.”

Since Lambert first shared the stage with QUEEN for the 2009 “American Idol” final, his dynamic performances have reinvigorated the band and delighted fans worldwide. Their first full show together — starting as they meant to go on — thrilled a half-a-million-strong crowd in the Ukraine capital city of Kiev in June 2012. Since then, May and Taylor‘s musical fireworks have been matched by Lambert‘s vocal prowess and stage presence, making for an explosive combination. Over 180 gigs later, the partnership has proven a commercial and critical triumph, playing to enraptured full houses in every corner of the world.

May and Taylor will team up once more with Lambert for the “Rhapsody” tour, an epic 25-date run from mid-July through late August. The North American headline tour will be produced by Live Nation.
