RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS drummer Chad Smith has commented on the tumultuous first three weeks of the President Donald Trump administration, saying that it’s “embarrassing” and “scary” to see what the real estate mogul is “trying to get away with.”
In just twenty-one days, Trump issued a series of executive actions while being marred by controversies over his travel ban, his insults of judges and others on Twitter, and worsening infighting among his staff and anonymous backstabbing in the press. Meanwhile, a series of noteworthy disruptions have been staged by Trump‘s opponents intent on making their voices heard.
During an appearance on Canada’s “The Strombo Show”, Smith backed activists protesting Trump‘s executive order on immigration. He said: “I’m obviously not a Donald Trump supporter, but through our lovely democratic system, we elected him. But that doesn’t mean we just have to go, ‘Okay, do whatever you want. Yeah, sure.'”
He continued: “[Trump is] nuts, he’s crazy, and it’s obscene, some of the shit that he’s trying to get away with. So we just have to stay on it. It’s really galvanized the sort of liberal part… I mean, where the fuck were you guys back in November?”
Smith added: “It’s sad, to me, that someone in that position of power and being the leader of the free world, and you see Donald Trump… It’s just embarrassing and it’s kind of sad and scary, because he’s not a politician; he’s a reality star, a businessman. And I don’t know that he knows exactly what he’s got himself into. But he does have Steve Bannon — the crazy Breitbart white supremacist, basically the de facto president — telling him, ‘I think you should do this,’ and, ‘I think you should do that.’ So it’s a wild time we live in.”
The rocker tried to remain positive, explaining that his band can play a significant role in bringing people together.
“What’s good is that we get to play our music and bring a lot of positivity,” Smith said. “We travel all over the place and play all over the world, and we’re so fortunate and grateful to have that opportunity, and people are still coming to see us after all of these years. It’s amazing. We’re so grateful. And hey, man, this is our moment and we’re all here together. Let’s celebrate this. Here’s some positivity. It’s a beautiful thing when our music can do that. So we just keep spreading the love.”

Back in December, Smith‘s wife made headlines when she was accused of verbally and physically assaulting actor Scott Baio over his support for Trump.
Baio was a vocal supporter of Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign and made a speech at the Republican National Convention in late July.
The CHILI PEPPERS supported Bernie Sanders during the campaign, playing benefits for the senator from Vermont, who failed to wrest the Democratic nomination from Hillary Clinton.
The CHILI PEPPERS‘ 2017 North American tour will continue through late June.
