Shmonty of the KFMA Rock 102 radio station conducted an interview with SLIPKNOT singer Corey Taylor before the band’s September 27 concert at the Tucson Convention Center in Tucson, Arizona. You can now watch the chat below.
Speaking about certain interviewers who take things that he says out of context and use them as cheap clickbait headlines, Taylor said: “Half the time, all they wanna do is make sure that they get it up just so they can have it in the headline, so then all the cut-and-pasters pick it up and then just smear it all over the place, taking everything out of context. It’s infuriating.
“I mean, the old adage still applies: the only bad press is no press at all. But, you know, sometimes you just want people to get it. It’s, like, half the time, you take stuff that I said and you put it in a certain context, or you take it out of context, and it turns into something completely different. It’s, like, ‘Woah, woah, woah… You need to go back to the source and hear what I was actually saying.’ But what else is new? That’s the price you pay for not censoring yourself. And I guess what’s the good side and the bad side to being able to speak your mind and not be one of these vanilla, cookie-cutter celebrity types… God, I hate saying that when it comes to me. But these people who are just so overly contrite and just won’t say anything that has any reflection of who they are, ’cause they’re so afraid of pissing people off. If that’s the price you pay for being yourself, then I guess I’ll deal with it.”
He added: “It’s good and it’s bad. On one level, you are, like I said, taken out of context and smeared all over the place, but the benefit is that your touchstone never changes; you come back to yourself. You’re, like, ‘I know who I am.’ And I don’t have to put on airs or be somebody different when the mic goes on. It’s just me. So I don’t have to fake anything. It’s, like, this is who I am, this is what I believe, and this is just the way it is.
“So, I guess, on one hand, it’s ad naseum, being taken and smeared all over the place. But at the same time, if you’re gonna have stuff smeared, it might as well be stuff that you believe. So it is what it is.”
SLIPKNOT was forced to postpone its North American trek with MARILYN MANSON by three weeks after Taylor underwent what he described as “an unplanned spinal surgery.”
The summer trek was likely SLIPKNOT‘s last U.S. tour in support of its latest album, “.5: The Gray Chapter”, which was released in October 2014.
