During a January 30 appearance on Australia’s “The Morning Show”, TWISTED SISTER frontman Dee Snider spoke about what it was like when the band’s song “We’re Not Gonna Take It” first became a smash hit after it was released as a single in April 1984.
“It was obviously a dream come true,” Dee said (see video below). “There was this one moment where I knew I had arrived. I came home from being on tour. We heard it was doing well in the States. The record just came out. And my wife sent me to the grocery store to get some milk or something. And I’m in the car and I turn on the radio and it’s ‘We’re Not Gonna Take It’. I go, ‘Woah!’ So I put on the other rock radio station, and it’s ‘We’re Not Gonna Take It’. And then I said… There was one more rock station, and I said, ‘Let’s go for the trifecta.’ ‘We’re Not Gonna Take It’. So every station was playing it, and this was going on all over the world. It was going on here [in Australia].”
Asked if it was difficult to keep from getting a “big head” once “We’re Not Gonna Take It” became a huge success, Dee said: “I’ve been with [my wife] Suzette 43 years, in April. She did the hair, she did the makeup, she did the costumes [for the band in early years]. She was the little woman behind the monster. But she would keep me grounded, ’cause I’d come [back] to the house from tour: ‘I am a God!’ She’d go, ‘Take out the diaper pail, because it smells terrible.’ And I was, like, ‘What?’ She’d go, ‘Take out the diaper pail.’ And I’d go, ‘Okay. It’s good to be back home.'”
Snider admitted that it wasn’t always easy for him and his wife to survive the ups and downs and keep things fresh decades into their union.
“We nearly came apart,” he said. “We had our moments, because you get to that point where everybody’s saying ‘yes,’ and you don’t wanna hear the word ‘no.’ And Suzette, she never had a problem telling me ‘no’ from the day I met her, and she wasn’t gonna kowtow just because I was suddenly this big rock star. So she kept telling me ‘no,’ and I didn’t wanna hear it, but we worked through it. And thank God, ’cause… [we have] four grown kids [and] four grandchildren now. And [we’re] still in love. And she’s hot.”
Snider is currently in Australia on a solo spoken-word tour,
