All’appello dei paesi facenti parte del circolo metal progressive mancava giusto la Grecia; anzi, per la precisione Creta. E’ proprio ad Eraklion che circa dieci anni fa si formano i Winter Crescent, band che solo oggi arriva al primo disco autoprodotto dopo una lunga serie di demo. La proposta del gruppo è un metal progressive dalle atmosfere crepuscolari fortemente influenzato dai Fates Warning. Come prevedibile la performance della band è di tutto rispetto a livello tecnico-esecutivo, ma del tutto insoddisfacente in quanto a feeling ed efficacia dei pezzi. Sette tracce ben suonate ma che al tempo stesso non decollano mai, complice una produzione sin troppo approssimativa persino per un lavoro autoprodotto; non è difficile cogliere tanti buoni spunti in quà e là, quello che manca però è una direzione precisa, un refrain, una stoccata vincente ma sopratutto una buona dose di amalgama. Insomma, quel quid che possa giustificare un interessamento verso i Winter Crescent al di fuori dell’Egeo. Viene da pensare che dietro il titolo di “Top Demo 2009″ assegnato da Greek Metal Hammer a “Battle Of Egos” ci sia una buona dose di nazionalismo e lo dico nella maniera meno maligna possibile; non sono un conoscitore della scena metal ellenica, è probabile che questo sia un gruppo rappresentativo della scena locale e faccia da traino a tutto un movimento, ma francamente è difficile credere che non sia possibile fare di meglio. L’entusiasmo della carta stampata locale è quindi del tutto ingiustificato. Scarse e frammentarie sono invece le informazioni sulle attività della band; di certo sappiamo solo che attualmente è in cerca di un contratto discografico. Non possiamo far altro che augurare loro buona fortuna.
